Sri Lanka’s Coastal Gem of Sun, River, and Bliss

KEY INFORMATION

Bentota Introduction

Bentota is more than just a beach town — it's a place that carries the quiet charm of everyday life in coastal Sri Lanka. Located just over 60 km south of Colombo, this riverside town has long been a favourite among those looking for slow mornings, golden sunsets, and a deep sense of place.

Historically, Bentota has been a key stop along the ancient southern trade route and is known for its contributions to Ayurvedic healing, cinnamon production, and traditional craftsmanship. The name ‘Bentota’ is believed to have come from the legendary demon ‘Bem’ who ruled the riverbank — a mix of folklore and geography that reflects the richness of the area.

Growing up here, life moved at a different pace. Fishing boats bobbed in the river at dawn, cricket matches played out in school grounds, and evenings were often spent under coconut trees sharing stories with neighbours. That rhythm still exists — and it’s something you’ll feel when you arrive.

Bentota might be better known today for its beaches and resorts, but underneath it all is a local spirit that hasn’t changed. This page is our way of sharing that with you — what to see, what to do, and a few personal stories along the way.

Whether you're seeking adventure on the water, a cultural immersion, or simply a tropical escape, Bentota offers the perfect blend of experiences for every kind of traveller.
