Historically, Bentota has been a key stop along the ancient southern trade route and is known for its contributions to Ayurvedic healing, cinnamon production, and traditional craftsmanship. The name ‘Bentota’ is believed to have come from the legendary demon ‘Bem’ who ruled the riverbank — a mix of folklore and geography that reflects the richness of the area.

Growing up here, life moved at a different pace. Fishing boats bobbed in the river at dawn, cricket matches played out in school grounds, and evenings were often spent under coconut trees sharing stories with neighbours. That rhythm still exists — and it’s something you’ll feel when you arrive.

Best Time to Visit

Bentota is generally an all year round destination. However, it is considered best from November to April, when the weather is warm and dry — perfect for beach activities, water sports, and outdoor adventures. May to October is considered the off-season, with occasional rain and rougher seas, though you'll find fewer crowds and lower prices during this time.

Most accommodations, including Fortress de Jayaweera, offer free Wi-Fi. If you're planning to be out and about, consider getting a local SIM card from Dialog or Mobitel at the airport for good mobile data coverage across Sri Lanka. 💵 Money & Payments

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).
ATMs are available in Aluthgama and Bentota. It’s handy to carry some cash for tuk-tuks, small shops, beach vendors and for tipping.
Credit/debit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants, but not everywhere.

🛺 Getting Around

Tuk-tuks are the easiest way to get around locally — they're affordable, but always negotiate the price before the ride.
For day trips, consider hiring a private driver, especially if you're heading to places like Galle, Mirissa, or inland sights like Lunuganga.

Bentota is located roughly 65km south of Colombo, along Sri Lanka’s stunning southwest coastline. Getting here is easy, with a few different options depending on your travel style, time, and budget.

🚗 By Private Car or Taxi

For a smooth and direct journey — especially after a long flight — booking a private car or airport taxi is the most comfortable and direct way to reach Bentota. The drive typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on whether you come via the Southern Expressway ($2 toll payable) or the more scenic and toll free coastal route (traffic may vary during time of day.

Cost: Approx. $50–$100 USD
Best for: Families, travelers with luggage, or those wanting a hassle-free start to their trip.

💡 Ask your villa or hotel if they can organize a trusted driver for you in advance.

🚆 By Train

For a more local and adventurous experience, take the coastal railway line from Colombo Fort Station to Bentota Railway Station, which is conveniently located near the town center. Trains along this route offer breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.

Travel Time: Around 2 to 2.5 hours
Cost: Roughly $3–$15 USD, depending on the class and train type.
Good to know:
- There is no direct train from the airport, so you’ll first need to get a taxi or bus to Colombo Fort.
- Seats are not always guaranteed in 2nd or 3rd class unless you book 1st class in advance.
- If your accommodation isn’t within walking distance of the train station, you’ll need a tuk-tuk for the final stretch.

💡 Insider tip: Sit on the right side of the train when heading south for the best ocean views.

🚐 By Bus

Public and private buses frequently operate along the Colombo–Galle–Matara coastal route, stopping at Aluthgama (just before Bentota) and occasionally in Bentota town itself. These coastal buses are very affordable, but can get crowded, and may not be the most comfortable option for travelers with large luggage.

There are also long-distance buses that run on the Southern Expressway, offering a faster and air-conditioned alternative. However, Expressway buses do not stop in Bentota directly. The closest stop is Aluthgama, from which you’ll need to take a short tuk-tuk ride (around 10–15 minutes) to reach your accommodation in Bentota.

To board an Expressway bus, you’ll need to go to the Colombo Central Expressway Bus Terminal in Kottawa, located about 20 km from central Colombo. This option is ideal if you're starting from Colombo or heading south from the airport with minimal luggage.

Travel Time: 2.5 to 4 hours (depending on stops, traffic and bus route)
Cost: From $1–$5 USD for a local bus, up to $10–$15 USD for an air-conditioned express service.

💡 Insider tip: If stopping in Aluthgama, grab a short tuk-tuk ride (approx. $2–$4 USD) to reach your villa or resort in Bentota.

🛫 Flying Into Sri Lanka?

Nearest international airport: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake (just north of Colombo)
From the airport: No direct trains or buses to Bentota, so the easiest connection is via private car or pre-arranged hotel transfer.
